Is ‘Fetal Farming’ In Our Future?

Tuesday, July 18, 2006

By Andrea Lafferty

At the end of the day today, it is expected that the U.S. Senate will have debated and voted on three bills dealing with stem cell research. TVC supports two of these bills: S. 2754, the Alternative Pluripotent Stem Cell Therapies Enhancement Act, and S. 3504, the Fetus Farming Prohibition Act. We oppose the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, H.R. 810.

If liberals have their way on the issue of embryonic stem cell research, it is likely that our nation will once again push over an ethical line that should never be crossed. A vital point in this whole debate is that the research done so far on embryonic stem cells has come up empty. Why should taxpayers be expected to pay for more such research—especially when adult stems have already been successfully used to cure diseases? Why are liberals so determined to kill the unborn when adult stem cells have already shown such promise?

If pro-abortion forces win the stem cell debate, it is inevitable that fetal farms will be established to harvest stem cells from unborn human beings. This nightmare scenario is reminiscent of the 1970s Michael Crichton novel, “Coma,” where adult humans were kept in comatose states in a hospital so that their organs could be auctioned off to the highest bidder on a world stock market.

Aldous Huxley’s 1931 utopian novel “Brave New World” painted a picture of a society that manufactured human beings in test tubes on assembly lines and where the rulers deliberately created mentally deficient humans to do menial labor. These fetus farms kept the society supplied with compliant workers. The society was controlled by totalitarians who kept the population sedated by the drug Soma.

Pro-abortionists have already decided that unborn humans are not really humans at all, so they can be killed in the mother’s womb. It is a very small step for them to recommend the establishment of fetus farms to grow humans for their stem cells.

This isn’t simply my opinion. Dr. Stuart Newman, professor of cell biology and anatomy at New York Medical College, believes this scenario is likely. In testimony before the Senate Subcommittee on Health in March of 2002, he told the Senators: “Cloning embryos for producing embryo stem cells will, by failing to deliver on its promises, inevitably lead to calls to extend the life span of cloned embryos so as to permit harvesting developmentally more advanced cells and tissue for research and potential therapies …. Frustration over lack of progress in producing safe and effective therapeutics from embryo stem cells will lead to calls to permit harvesting of embryo germ cells from two to three month clonal embryos.”

How many more ethical lines will our cultural elites cross when it comes to experimenting with or exterminating human lives? Liberals already vehemently defend partial-birth abortion, a process involving pulling a child from the womb, puncturing of his skull and sucking out the brain so the abortion can be completed. They typically support euthanasia as well to rid our nation of the elderly.

Is there any line a liberal will not cross to exterminate human lives? Apparently not.
