Police being asked about
treatment of illegals
County had considered adopting 'sanctuary' designation

A Washington-based public interest group that tracks down and cracks down on government corruption now is targeting the Chicago police department, seeking through an open records lawsuit information about how authorities deal with illegal aliens.
Judicial Watch said the case was filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Ill., and seeks an order that would require the agency to fulfill the group's Freedom of Information Act request for documents regarding policies and procedures that govern officers' interaction with illegals.
The investigation was launched after the Cook County Board of Commissioners considered a proposal to declare the county a "sanctuary" for illegal aliens.
"Sanctuary policies are affront to the rule of law, worsen illegal immigration crises, and put American citizens at risk," said Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch.
"Local police departments cannot continue to undermine federal immigration law. The Chicago Police Department should be required to comply with the Illinois Freedom of Information Act so taxpayers can understand its immigration policies," he said.
The resolution that was under consideration would designate the county a "sanctuary" for illegals and sought to conform the Cook County sheriff's office immigration policy to a Chicago city police policy that prevents employees from helping immigration enforcement or reporting suspected illegal immigrants to federal authorities, Judicial Watch said.
Judicial Watch is questioning whether the policies are "consistent with the requirements of federal law."
It is just the latest is a series of actions by Judicial Watch in its nationwide campaign to have the nation's immigration laws enforced.
For example, a battle is going on in Los Angeles over the police agency's "Special Order 40," a policy that prohibits police officers from asking about an individual's immigration status, and apparently restricts police officers from cooperating with federal immigration authorities.
The organization also is seeking information about similar policies in the Orange County, Calif., sheriff's office and police agencies in Houston and Westchester County, N.Y.
