ACTION ALERT

Congress, Please Convince President Bush to Pardon Border Patrol Agents Ramos and Compean

Wednesday, December 05, 2007

Take Action!

The Senate Committee on the Judiciary heard testimony on the prosecution of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean on July 17, 2007. Click here to view a webcast of the hearing.

The sentencing of Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean to prison for 11 and 12 years, respectively, for their attempted arrest of a drug dealer on the U.S./Mexico border is a terrible travesty of justice. Rep. Tom Tancredo's House Concurrent Resolution 37 (H. Con. Res. 37) is an effort to put Congressional pressure on President Bush to pardon these brave agents. The resolution concludes with these words:

"Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That it is the sense of Congress that the President should swiftly and unconditionally pardon agents Ramos and Compean."

The New American and The John Birch Society have been in the forefront of this effort over the past year. Although the major media have largely ignored this story, over the past several months talk-radio and numerous Internet sites have made this a VERY HOT topic. Congress and the White House are under heavy pressure to right this wrong. Now is the time to pour it on. People are rightfully and righteously angry when they learn about what has happened to these agents (For more information, see "Punished for Doing Their Job," in the February 19, 2007 issue of The New American). On top of everything else, agent Ramos was severely beaten up by prison inmates shortly after his incarceration.

In an encouraging development, an appeals court judge has stated that federal prosecutors may have overreacted in their case against the Border Patrol agents. Another appeals court judge indicated that the judge presiding over the trial failed to properly instruct the jury, and allowed certain evidence to be withheld, which would have supported the defense of Ramos and Compean.

Show your friends and associates what they can do to help get a pardon for Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean by forwarding this action alert to them.

    • We ask that you immediately contact your congressman and ask him or her to support Representative Tancredo's pardon resolution, H. Con. Res. 37. See editable message under "Take Action."

    • We ask you to urge your senators to support a similar resolution in the Senate. See editable message under "Take Action."
