George Detweiler Articles

Tuesday, July 24, 2007     Has the Court Moved Right?

On July 11, shortly after submitting this article, Mr. George Detweiler unexpectedly passed away at his home in Twin Falls, Idaho.

George was a great friend and patriot who, in addition to writing articles for THE NEW AMERICAN in defense of constitutional principles, was also very active in the John Birch Society, this magazine’s parent organization. He headed the society’s campaign in defense of the Constitution and served on the society’s Council and Executive Committee. A successful lawyer, he earned his J.D. at Georgetown University and served as assistant attorney general for the state of Idaho before entering private practice. In “retirement,” he devoted much of his time to the freedom fight.

We believe George would want us to publish his final words to us which, as always, were guided by his keen understanding of the Constitution. He will be greatly missed by all of us who knew him. May he rest in peace. — Editor

August 21, 2006     An Alternative to Amendments

Many Americans, tired of federal courts meddling in their lives, have resorted to trying to add new amendments to the Constitution, but there's a better solution.

George Detweiler is a constitutional lawyer and former assistant attorney general for the state of Idaho.

Interest is multiplying both in and out of Congress to use Article III, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution as an alternative to the constitutional amendment process for curbing the excesses of runaway federal courts.......

September 4, 2006      Con-con Movement Returns

Some proponents of a federal constitutional amendment to protect traditional marriage are considering calling for a dangerous constitutional convention to accomplish their goal.

George Detweiler is a constitutional lawyer and former assistant attorney general for the state of Idaho.

They're baaack — those pesky advocates of a constitutional convention. Following defeat of a federal constitutional amendment in the U.S. Senate to define marriage exclusively as a union of one man and one woman, talk began to circulate favoring a constitutional convention to accomplish the task........

      Term Limits Temptation

Behind the subtle appeal of term limits lurks a hidden agenda of the wholesale restructuring of our federal system.

George Detweiler was born in Salt Lake City in 1943. But, he has spent most of his life in Twin Falls, Idaho, where he wants to be known as one of its proud citizens.

Although he received his bachelor’s and law degrees from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., he happily reports that the years he spent in the nation’s capital never compromised his determination to keep America independent.

George served for two years as an Idaho assistant attorney general. For most of his career, George ran a private law practice in the Twin Falls area. No longer practicing law, he devotes a significant portion of his time and energy directing JBS members throughout the nation in their efforts to protect the U.S. Constitution from any state officials who would propose a constitutional convention. He actively participates in Society activities in his community.

Having a lawyer with George’s thorough understanding of the Constitution within our Council has been of great benefit to our organization. He was appointed to the Council in 2003.
